Kimi is an organized planner who knows exactly what she wants and has the strength to see it through. When she approached AO for pre-wedding photos, she had a specific vision for what she wanted: seven looks for seven places in seven hours.

I knew it would be a challenge to meet that schedule all in one day. Most of the work would need to take place in a moving vehicle with no electrical outlets. (A standard inverter doesn't have enough power to heat up a curling iron.) Moreover, Kimi lived far from the Bay Area. I was determined to make her dream come true, so AO signed the contract and scheduled a trial to take place four days before the big photo shoot.

At the trial in the AO studio, Kimi and I planned and practiced the seven different hairstyles to go with just one makeup look. Kimi wanted certain hairstyle to go with specific locales in San Francisco. I worked on each style and made some adjustments until we achieved the precise styles she had in mind.

The day of the pre-wedding photo shoot was typically cool and cloudy in The City. I showed up at Kimi's fiancé John's house to do the first round of work. For the first 90 minutes, I carefully applied Kimi's airbrushed makeup for a clean and natural look with hair down and curled, parted on the side. She was happy with both makeup & hairstyle!

Kimi's determination and energetic disposition helped her sail through the entire event. Her lipstick only had to be touched up once during the seven-plus hours. To keep the makeup in pristine condition, she avoided eating and drinking.

The ten-person, white stretch limo held Kimi, John, John's aunt, me, professional photographer Ken Koto, and the chauffeur. Each hairstyle had to be done in the moving limo within the 10-15 minute drive to the next locale. At most places, I would follow Kimi to make sure her look stayed intact, while Ken shot the photos.

Kimi and John are a sweet couple. Kimi's communication with me resulted in a friendship that made me enthusiastic about supporting her dream. I was excited to face a professional challenge and pleased that this unique opportunity worked out so well. It was fun working with Ken again, too. I appreciate the photos that show in this blog!

Rachanee was wonderful and extremely professional. Her and her assistants (who were also great) did make-up and hair for me and six bridesmaids in a timely fashion for my wedding. I was even late due to last-minute errands and she still got us all done an hour before the ceremony. I was initially hesitant about hiring someone to do hair and make-up because of the cost but it was definitely worth it as it made the wedding significantly less stressful. We all felt confident and received many compliments. I would recommend Art Occasions to anyone in the area who wants a group of stylists who make you look great and natural. There are other wedding vendors I used that I regret but she was not one of them.

June 5, 2010 At the Oceano Hotel in Half Moon Bay.
It was the first sunny and warm day after a long, cold spring. I remember conversing with Janice while doing her makeup and hair. Happily, and with a full smile, she told me, “I was praying for a nice and sunny day for my wedding!"
The Oceano is fairly new, and it has a great setup for the wedding and photos. Imagine sitting at the ceremony and feeling a balmy ocean breeze to temper the sun’s bright warmth. A perfect day and a perfect place.

We finished everyone’s hair and makeup ahead of the wedding day schedule, so we hung around to enjoy all the beauty around us until the photographer arrived.

The wedding was held at Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco on June 1, 2010.

I love her designed makeup and hairstyle that gave the bride an overall elegant look. Her family travelled from Japan to attend the wedding. Her father is a master hairstylist. He did this fabulous hair-do, which was perfectly suited to my airbrush makeup.

The ceremony room complemented the bride’s gold and cream sophistication.

The bride chose to use a softly romantic bouquet that also supported her wedding theme. She was very happy to show me that she has pick the colors and all flowers when they bring them to the hotel.

Tips to avoid wedding stress

Most brides don't realize the havoc that can be caused by a little tube of mascara on their wedding day. Or that wearing something blue on such a day is fine as long as it's not your eyeshadow.

The only way to avoid such catastrophes, and wedding photographs that make you wince for the next 30 years, is to hire a professional Make-up Artist. Brides go to great lengths to ensure their hair is perfect for the day with salon time booked months in advance, yet they often scrimp on their make-up.

Sure, you do a great job of your own make-up everyday but can you do a the same under pressure? Shaking nervous hands, bombarding questions or that salon appointment that runs you late, can make even the calmest Bride lose her cool. The same for the "I'll do your make-up" Bridesmaids who also have to do their own. Remember time is of the essence pre-ceremony. So save the friendship and hire a professional.

However before booking a Make-up Artist there are a few tips that will save you from disappointment.

Firstly find the right one, because like hairdressers, not all Make-up Artists are equal. Word of mouth is the best way. Ask a friend who's recently got married who they used and ask to see their wedding photos. If the wedding photos don't look great, look elsewhere. Make-up Artists advertise in bridal magazines, newspapers or through salons and spas. Always ask to see their photographic portfolio, it's proof of their work.

Ensure that the Make-up Artist comes to you - where you're getting dressed. Your make-up should be the last thing that gets done before putting on your dress. It's an important part of your wedding day preparation and needs to be in a calm environment not a salon or department store.

Request a practice run from the Make-up Artist before your big day, some include this in their fees, others charge extra. It's better to decide on what style and shades of make-up you'll wear while you're calm. It also gives you a chance to see how much time you'll need to allocate.

Wear a similar colored top to your wedding dress during your practice make-up or if you're wearing white wrap a white towel around your shoulders. Brides-to-be often think their practice make-up is too heavy because they're in casual clothes and without their hair done.

The importance of a practice run is vital. It allows you to see the work of the Make-up Artist you've employed. Better to find out whether you like their style before the big day than an hour before you're going to walk down the aisle.

It also gives you the opportunity to test and discuss exactly what make-up will be used. Will it be the Make-Up Artists', will it be yours or a bit of both. If a certain cosmetic is going to make you break out or give you an allergy, find out before the first click of the camera.

For this reason many brides like to use their own make-up especially their mascara but this is where that little applicator aptly named 'wand' can create magic or havoc. If it's likely you will be shedding a tear or two, use a waterproof mascara. Remember the only time Panda eyes look good is on Pandas.

The same for false eyelashes. If you're not used to them test them out and wear them before the wedding day. The glue may make your eyes puffy or it may not hold. A fallen falsie will always look like a caterpillar crawling across your cheek.

Employing a Make-up Artist may seem like a cost you can do without, especially if Aunt Sally's already volunteered but if you want to look really celebrity stunning use a professional. Even if you have to cut costs elsewhere, for instance take a tier off of your wedding cake it will guarantee you won't have tears every time you see your wedding photos.

Wedding hair extensions & makeup.

Every woman has dreamed of her wedding day, but when her man actually proposes, she may not be ready to live up to her dream. She may have imagined long, lustrous hair trailing down her bare back. But what if it’s the height of summer, and she just cut her hair short? Or what if her hair is naturally fine and wispy, not at all the look she longs for? These dreams can come true, and hair extensions are the answer.

For hair extensions, Art Occasions uses one hundred percent human hair, usually in 18-inch lengths. These come in a range of colors, which blend in perfectly with the existing hair.

Rosa’s hair is extremely layered, with the ends barely reaching her collarbone. This style limits her choices to wearing it down in her everyday look or putting it up in a sleek updo. Both of those options can be attractive, but if she wanted more options, there simply wouldn’t be enough hair to work with.

Hair extensions added length and volume. We touched up with a curling iron and some hairspray for gorgeous, natural look.

Using makeup, Rachanee blended a “smoky eye” look for Rosa. This kind of application helped open up her beautiful almond-shaped eyes. Rachanee kept a more natural look for the lips, adding just a lip liner and gloss. The low-key makeup on the mouth compensates for the smoldery drama going on in the upper part of Rosa’s face.

Sandra’s mid-length hair is super fine.
To add length and volume, we used hair extensions in the lightest blond shade.

To keep the hair in place, we anchored it with blond-colored bobby pins.

To show that any color can be used to enhance a wedding look – not just the usual pink or peach shades of makeup – Rachanee used a more challenging color. She used three different shades of green – yellow green for the highlight color, olive for the midtone, and mint for the contour – blended to complement Sandra’s striking hazel eyes.

Jen & Donny had a city wedding in San Francisco last weekend. After I did Jen's trial on Christmas Eve, Jen chose AO to provide makeup and hair for herself and 7 bridesmaids, plus the mother in-law to be.

On the big day, the AO Team and I arrived at the Whitcomb Hotel early morning. The room was quite large, so we were comfortable working and moving around. We finished with everyone about an hour early according to the wedding schedule.

Rachanee made my wedding day experience wonderful. I had been going to her for my pre-wedding trials for hair/make-up. She was very helpful and knowledgeable about my needs for my day. On the actual day of, she knew that with so many women to work on (6 bridesmaids and 1 mother-in-law) that she would need back-up. There were two other assistants to help with hair and make-up. My bridesmaids looked gorgeous and the experience was fun. My mother saw how beautiful the women looked and ended up getting her make-up done as well! My make-up felt light on my skin and was "just right" on the color. My hair had gone through some changes from curls to a twist on the day of. The style was simple, yet modern and elegant at the same time. It ended up feeling like me and not like other styles I always saw at weddings/magazines. Rachanee worked hard to work with our schedule in time/location. It was an experience that every woman getting married should have.

Holidays Makeup And Hair colored.

The holidays are one of the best times of year to treat yourself. As you meet colleagues, friends, and family members for various celebratory events, you will want to look your best. Sprucing up your hair takes time, but it can have the deepest impact on the overall impression you convey.

Alisa came to the salon as a model for an Art Occasions photo shoot. Although we wanted to play with makeup, Alisa knew her hair needed some work first. It had been treated several months before, but had grown three inches of new hair in the meantime. Her natural hair color was dark brown (Level 2), but most of the length was a dull brassy brown (Level 6).

Alisa could have returned to an overall dark brown, but she preferred a base color that would better match her naturally tanned skin tone. To transform her hair with a warm-toned medium brown (Level 5), I used Wella's Koleston Perfect color pigment, mixed with 20 Volumes Developer. The treatment resulted in healthier-looking hair with a brilliant shine that complemented her luminous skin.

Simple by Day and Sexy by Night

Makeup is one of the fastest, easiest ways to completely change a woman's look. At an Art Occasions photo shoot, I wanted to show how radically different two looks can be. With the model Alisa, I created a day look and an evening look.

The key to a day look is to apply all the usual things, but lightly and with less color. I started by applying the airbrushed foundation. The airbrush tool is not something most clients have in their home vanity case. However, it is the very best at creating a smooth, even look. Not only does it look natural, but it feels natural and holds up longer than the usual foundations. A light blush on her cheekbones left a touch of color. I added some eye shadow, applying various muted shades for the highlight, midtone, and contour. I blended all of the tones well then added the eyeliner. I added gloss to enhance Alisa's nude lips. Her portrait was taken in soft, natural light, such as you'd find in a simple morning wedding or other daytime occasion. The overall effect is simple, pretty, and natural.

For a more sophisticated look that a woman might enjoy in the evening or for a holiday party, she needs more color. I showed this look by using the same base of foundation on Alisa, but I added more intensely differentiated colors to her eyes and lips. I also added false eyelashes to make her eyes stand out more. At night, people are more likely to be illuminated by artificial lights or candles. This portrait was shot in incandescent light to illustrate how well the overall makeup appears under evening illumination.

Rachanee was awesome! I had to plan my bay area wedding from Los Angeles so had to select out of town vendors purely from recommendations on the web! It was a little nerve wracking, but it turned out so well! Rachanee met with me in my hotel room just 2 days before the wedding for my trial run (only time that worked for me!). I gave her pretty vague instructions--pretty, natural-medium makeup that covers/lasts all day and a soft up-do hairstyle. She showed me some pictures from her books/magazines to find things I liked and then ran with it! It turned out so great! On the day of the wedding she met in my hotel room and got me and my maid of honor ready in plenty of time...she really did a fantastic job on both of us. We got so many compliments and felt great all night. We didn't have to touch up our makeup once! I highly recommend Rachanee and Art Occasions for their wonderful work!

Rachanee did my bridal hair and makeup and she did a
fantastic job! My makeup looked beautiful and felt very natural.

I was worried that I would need some touch-ups, but even after a
12 hour day, no touch-ups necessary! My hair was pinned up
in long curls, and the curls stayed in place all day, despite it being
a very windy day. At the end of the night, my hair was still neat
and tidy.
Looking back at photos, I am extremely happy with the end result.

I absolutely loved Rachanee's work on my hair and make-up (bridesmaid) and my best friend's hair (bride) and make-up for my friend's wedding. Rachanee is patient and sweet and genuinely listens to what you want to look like. It was so nice to have a hair and make-up artist that was friendly and calm on the big day. She was able to perfectly recreate a hairstyle I picked out from a magazine and she adjusted the bride's hair until it was EXACTLY what she wanted. Our makeup looked natural and not overdone.
